woke up early and had home room in the morning. german teacher gave us a history lesson about the old east west border. after the history lesson all the aussie kids and 4 of the german people packed into 3minibuses to the old border at Hotensleben. Attend a tour conducted in german but translated by Danny ( a german student who spent a year in america and therefore spoke very good english) about the border and security measures 'back in the day'.
after that we went to an old chapel and had a look around there and then had a lunch of sausages and kartoffelsalat at the Schnapps brewery. we then attended a tour of the brewery once again translated by danny, but to the disappointment of everybody no free samples were given out.
after the brewerey we went to a museum in upplingen. the guy there didnt take the offer of having danny translate for him so it was done in a very broken mix of english and german. it would be true to say the highlight of that tour for the students was the waffles and tea at the end of it.
all the aussie kids then went to an old barn near the museum where all the host families and teachers were setting up for the welcome party. before we ate there were a few speeches and the handing over of the didgeridoo (played by ryan). the photgrapher from the local newspaper also took a photo with all the partners which appeared in the paper on thursday.
after the feast the german people gave out tshirts and a gift bag to each of the aussie kids and to the delight of everyone there was a frisbee in each bag. it wasnt long before all the aussies and german kids were down at the local 'sportplatz' playing a mix of soccer, netball and rugby with a frisbee. it was a great icebreaker and everybody was much more comfortable after that. the rest of the night we just sat and chatted with the partners and everyobdy went home quite late.
